The branch network of Banca d’Italia consists of 38 branches organized into 21 regional branches (located in regional capitals and in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano), 11 local branches, and 6 branches specialized in cash handling services. Among the regional branches, 13 have been designated as main regional branches (Ancona, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Rome, Turin, Trieste and Venice).

The branch network contributes to the Bank’s institutional functions by operating at the local level in an integrated manner with the head office. The branches are an important hub for understanding and engaging in dialogue with local institutions and, albeit to varying degrees, providing services to the public. The activities carried out within the network include:
- the protection of customers of banking and financial intermediaries to promote fairness and transparency in relationships by supervising the conduct of intermediaries, providing individual protection instruments, including the examination of claims lodged with the Banking and Financial Ombudsman and of complaints, implementing financial education initiatives;
- information services for accessing the Central Credit Register and the Interbank Register of Bad Cheques and Payment Cards;
- banknote circulation, i.e. the distribution of euro banknotes and the safeguarding of the integrity and quality of the banknotes in circulation;
- local economic analysis and statistical surveys through the study of a region's economic and financial structure, the publication of reports and analyses on regional economic trends;
- prudential supervision of banking and financial intermediaries, operating mainly at a local level;
- anti-money laundering supervision (AML) of banking and financial intermediaries, operating mainly at a local level;
- the In-house Credit Assessment System (ICAS-BI) to rate the creditworthiness of non-financial corporations.
All 21 regional branches perform functions relating to customer protection, economic research, financial education and cash management. Some of them also carry out additional functions, as illustrated in the infographic below.
The 11 local branches focus on cash management services for private and institutional users and on information services. They operate in close coordination with the associated regional branch and contribute to financial education initiatives and economic analysis.
The 6 branches specialized in cash handling services process cash in technologically advanced facilities. They do not provide services to the public, but may perform outreach in the local area, particularly in the field of financial education.

In 2025, the Bank launched a reorganization plan for the branches, under which additional supervisory responsibilities (prudential, anti-money-laundering and customer protection) are decentralized and financial education activities and the creditworthiness rating of non-financial corporations are strengthened.
For reasons of efficiency and rationalization, the Brescia and Livorno branches will be closed, reducing the total number of branches from 38 to 36; the Milan and Florence regional branches will continue to contribute to the institutions and communities in the territories of the closed branches.

The Board of regents of the main branches. In each of the 13 main branches of the Bank, there is a Board of regents, which is charged with the administration of the main branch, the opening and closing of the vaults, and the cash audits.
The board of regents is charged with the administration of the main branch within the limits established by this statute, the opening and closing of the vaults, and the cash audit. To this end it establishes a roster. The board of regents ensures that the regulations and instructions of the Head Office are observed; it examines and approves the budget of the administrative expenses of the main branch.
Regents are appointed for six years by the Board of Directors, acting on a proposal from the Governor, and half shall complete their terms of office every three years. They may be reappointed. The number of regents depends on the activity of each main branch; the branch manager is also a member of the board.
The regents are chosen from among persons who have a thorough knowledge of the local economy. The candidates for the position of regent are selected among persons with significant experience in business, the professions, university teaching or high-level public management who also meet the requirement of integrity and independence.
Each board of regents elects, for a three-year period, a chairman and a secretary from among its members; they may be re-elected.
The councillors of the local branches. Each local branch may have between four and ten councillors, depending on the activity of the branch. The councillors are appointed by the Board of Directors, acting on a proposal from the Governor, from amongst persons meeting the same requirements laid down for the regents. Their term of office is six years and half complete their terms of office every three years. They may be reappointed.
