The triennial survey on the volume of transactions undertaken by resident banks in the foreign exchange and over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives markets gathers information on the size, structure and activity of those markets in order to increase market transparency and to better monitor patterns of activity in the global financial system.
The survey, internationally coordinated by the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, is carried out simultaneously by the individual central banks and monetary authorities. It gathers data on an unconsolidated basis on the volume of transactions (turnover) in the foreign exchange and OTC derivatives markets made by the banking intermediaries that are most active in these markets. Starting from 2025, a new dataset on the FX settlement is collected.
