Financial education and sustainability

Banca d'Italia is committed to raising awareness on sustainable finance, including through financial education activities focused on the opportunities and risks behind every financial decision.

The objectives of our sustainable finance education

Banca d'Italia wants to help consumers understand what sustainable finance is and make informed choices that will improve the management of their finances while pursuing their sustainable goals.

For savers, the inherent risk of investing in sustainable instruments without being fully aware of their characteristics is twofold: not only can it lead to financing businesses that do not promote sustainable goals, but also to making decisions that are risky and not in line with their needs and expectations.

Activities for adults

Banca d'Italia has made available to the public a section on sustainable finance in its financial education website l'Economia per tutti (Economics for everyone). Banca d'Italia also organizes face-to-face outreach events on sustainability, often in partnership with universities, trade associations and the media.

Our financial education activities use clear and simple language and a hands-on approach to answer the most frequently asked questions, such as the difference between green and sustainable finance, how finance can help make the world more sustainable, what risks climate change poses to the financial system and how to invest sustainably.

Our objective is to provide consumers with the tools to talk to their financial advisers with greater awareness before making an investment.

Activities for schools

Banca d'Italia has created a learning path on environmental sustainability for high school students. Our free online multimedia learning materials approach the complex and topical subject of the transition towards sustainable development from an economic perspective and in simple terms. We also organize specific events on environmental sustainability for teachers.

The objective is to increase students' understanding of the link between sustainability and the economy by explaining, among other things, the economic and financial effects of climate change, the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to protect the environment, the significance of individual consumers' choices and the role of sustainable finance in achieving the transition goals.

Further information

Greenwashing is a communication or marketing strategy whereby businesses, institutions and organizations make misleading or untrue statements about the environmental benefits of their products and practices. Businesses use greenwashing to persuade their increasingly environmentally aware customers to buy more of their products and services. In order to reduce this risk, the EU has set up a transparency framework (the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation) that requires financial intermediaries to disclose sustainability information about their financial products to investors. Understanding what transparency tools are available to consumers is essential for making informed investment decisions; this is why our financial education activities aim to explain the EU consumer protection framework in simple terms.
