Foreign workers' remittances sent abroad in the first quarter of 2026
In the first quarter of 2026, remittances sent abroad by foreign residents in Italy decreased by 2.2 per cent compared with the same period of the previous year (Table 1). The decline mainly reflects a reduction in remittances sent to Asia (€ -28.2 million; -3.1 per cent) and to Sub-Saharan Africa (€ -18.7 million; -7.5 per cent); only non-EU European countries recorded a modest increase (€1,9 million; +0.7 per cent).
Over the four quarters ending in March 2026, Bangladesh, India and Morocco were the top three recipient countries of remittances from Italy: the first accounted for 19.5 per cent of total outward flows, while the latter two received 6.9 and 6.8 per cent, respectively (Table 2).
