No. 1027 - Ain't no mountain nice enough: UNESCO listing of the Dolomites and tourism demand
In 2009, the Dolomites were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This study examines the effects of this designation on tourism demand and on a number of environmental indicators in municipalities located in the provinces of Trento, Bolzano, and Belluno.
Following the UNESCO listing, tourism arrivals increased for municipalities in the Dolomites, with larger effects observed for the Trento province and among domestic visitors. Over the same period, compared with the untreated municipalities, the number of tourist establishments remained broadly unchanged, while total bed capacity decreased, a pattern consistent with a reorientation towards smaller accommodation units, potentially reflecting quality upgrading. The observed increase in tourism flows was not associated with significant changes in land consumption or waste generation.
