The paper analyzes the diffusion of artificial intelligence (AI) among Italian and European firms, the potential effects of the new technology on productivity, and the conditions that could foster its adoption. It puts forward policy recommendations to support AI adoption in Italy, also drawing on the experience of more advanced countries in this area.

AI adoption among firms in Italy is below the European Union average and often confined to experimental uses. Under the hypothesis of a broad and deep uptake, the effects on productivity could be significant over the medium term. To foster this kind of uptake, public policies should reduce the uncertainty and the risk perceived by potential adopters, by strengthening technology transfer from research centres to firms, promoting specialized structures for AI integration into business processes, and leveraging public procurement to stimulate demand for AI-related services.
