The study analyses the nature of and reasons for the international strategy pursued by China under its current leadership and examines, on the one hand, the actions already undertaken by the Chinese authorities, and on the other hand the reactions observed in the rest of the world. This paper presents the results of an extensive survey involving 13 delegates and financial attachés from the Bank of Italy who have been seconded to General Consulates and Italian Embassies and Delegations in as many countries around the world.

There are several aspects to the economic and political strategy pursued: the creation of closer international economic ties; the proposal of alternative models of cooperation; and the promotion and support of important initiatives with an international scope. The advanced economies have had contrasting reactions; the USA, for example, has adopted a more confrontational negotiation stance, while Japan has put itself forward to the countries of East Asia as an alternative partner.
