Born in Adria (Rovigo) in 1961, he has served as Director General for Payments and Market Infrastructures since 16 December 2024.
After graduating with honours in Economics and Business from the University of Pavia in 1985 and following briefs work experiences as a researcher at the Polytechnic of Milan and at Banca Commerciale Italiana, he continued his postgraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, USA), obtaining an MA in Economics in 1989 and a PhD in Economics in 1995.
He joined the Bank of Italy in 1989, contributing to the development of the quarterly econometric model and the production of macroeconomic forecasts. In 2007, he was appointed Head of the Modelling and Forecasting Division; between 2013 and 2020 he served as Head of the Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy Directorate; between 2020 and 2024 he was Deputy Head of the Directorate General for Markets and Payment Systems.
He has served on several committees and working groups established by the European Commission, the Eurosystem, the G7, the G20 and the Bank for International Settlements, including the Monetary Policy Committee of the European Central Bank (2007-2020) and the Markets Committee of the Bank for International Settlements (2020-2024). Since 2022, he has served as co-chair of a working group of the Financial Stability Board established within the framework of the G20 Roadmap for the improvement of cross-border payments.
He has published numerous articles in Italian and international scientific journals, on topics mostly relating to macroeconomic modelling and monetary economics. He has taught statistics, econometrics and international and monetary economics at universities in Italy and abroad.
