Credit and financial reporting

The 'matrice dei conti' (matrix model) is a fundamental tool used by Banca d'Italia (the Bank) to collect statistical and supervisory data on banks' operations.

Conceived in the early 1970s and revised in 1989, the 'matrice dei conti' is a reporting scheme that contains the information necessary to meet the Bank's data needs, also with regard to its commitments to other national and supranational authorities. Its structure facilitates matching with data on operations and transactions produced by the reporting agents and it is flexible enough to easily incorporate amendments and additions in order to fulfil new reporting requirements. It also contains information, harmonized across the euro area, on the interest rates applied (by a sample of banks) to payables and receivables (stocks and new operations in the reference period) vis-à-vis households, non-profit associations and non-financial corporations.

Similarly, consolidated supervisory reports for banking groups contain information necessary to carry out an integrated analysis of the group and meet the Bank's data needs.

The ten-day statistical reports (submitted on a voluntary basis by a sample of banks) provide Banca d'Italia with frequent and timely information in summary form on some balance-sheet aggregates and interest rates applied by the banking system.

The statistical reports of financial intermediaries, while differing in some respects due to the specific nature of their operations, are consistent with those produced by banks. The reports cover, in particular, investment firms, undertakings for collective investment, special purpose vehicles and stockbrokers, and other financial intermediaries.

The quarterly survey on nominal lending and borrowing interest rates, which is compiled on a voluntary basis by a sample of entities, enables the acquisition of detailed information on lending conditions. More specifically, the lending rate data can be matched with data from the Central Credit Register, making it possible to analyse the structure of credit markets and examine the correlation between the rates applied and customers' risk profiles.

Finally, specific information on some sectors and on the characteristics of financial intermediaries' operations are collected through some additional surveys, either on a regular or ad hoc basis.
