This paper presents a preliminary analysis of nineteenth-century archival documentation housed in the Tuscan Section of the Historical Archives of Banca d'Italia, recently described to make it accessible to the public. Through an extensive bibliographic review and examination of documents produced by the governing bodies of the issuing institutions that operated in Florence during the brief period in which it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, we reconstruct the historical developments that, in the three decades following national unification, first led to the establishment in Tuscany of a complex banking system with significant monetary powers, and then to its gradual convergence toward the laborious process that culminated in the creation of Banca d'Italia through the merger of the Tuscan banks into the National Bank.
