Managing a central bank

October 2026

Central banks are complex organizations, called upon to combine stability objectives with the ability to innovate. Innovation requires a holistic approach in many areas (technology, organization, culture, skills), collaboration with other institutions and the market, and risk management. Central banks are public institutions that strive to be at the forefront of corporate social responsibility.

Managing them requires a shared culture, flexibility in driving change, alignment with strategy, and cohesion across departments and between people.

The seminar will adopt a holistic approach and, according to the latest trends and based on the Bank of Italy's experience, will cover: possible drivers of change, tools for monitoring and improving the quality of the organization, overcoming the silo approach, the optimization of processes, and digitalization.

The seminar will also illustrate the Bank's experience in strategic and operational planning, organizational analysis and development, budget and cost control, and information systems to support decision making. In the area of people management, the latest approaches to skills analysis and development, diversity and inclusion, work-life balance, and new ways of and spaces for working will be shared.

Participants will be encouraged to engage actively in discussions and in analysing case studies, and to share first-hand experiences.
