Born in Salerno on 15 May 1958, he graduated with honours from the University of Salerno with a degree in law in 1981. He joined the Bank of Italy in 1984 and was assigned to the Siena Branch, where he dealt with banking supervision and internal administration.

In 1988 he joined the Bank's Internal Audit Directorate, where he participated in and coordinated several audits concerning the Bank's processes and IT applications and the set-up of the head office and branches. He helped to develop the internal audit policy and the relevant methodologies and analytical tools. He coordinated the work of the task force in charge of establishing the Bank's Internal Audit Advisory Committee, for which he served as Secretary from its inception until 2016.

Among the numerous positions in which he served, he was acting manager in several branches and chaired several committees for external recruitment and promotions. In 2016 he became Deputy Head of the Internal Audit Directorate.

He is currently a member of the ESCB's Internal Auditors Committee and participates in the Central Banks Internal Auditors Group set up under the aegis of the Bank for International Settlements.

On 1 July 2019 he was appointed Head of the Internal Audit Directorate.
