Claudio Impenna

Deputy Director General for Payments and Market Infrastructures

He was born in Rome in 1959, and has served as Deputy Head of the Directorate General for Payments and Market Infrastructures since 3 April 2025.

After graduating with honours in Economics and Business from the 'LUISS Guido Carli' University, he began his career in 1983 in the research unit of a securities investment firm. In 1986, he joined Banca d'Italia's Economic Research Department, where he first focused on credit intermediaries and later on financial statistics and analysis. In 1990, he earned a Master of Science degree from the London School of Economics.

In the following years, he worked in the field of payment system analysis and oversight. In 2004, he was appointed Head of the Payment Systems Analysis Division and, in 2009, Head of the Money and Financial Markets Division. From 2019 to 2025, he served as Head of the Market and Payment Systems Oversight Directorate.

He has been part of several committees and working groups within Banca d'Italia, the Eurosystem, the G20 and the Bank for International Settlements, including the Market Infrastructures and Payments Committee of the European Central Bank and the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) of the Bank for International Settlements, both since 2019. Since 2021, he has chaired two working groups established by the CPMI as part of the G20 Roadmap for Enhancing Cross-border Payments.

He has published numerous articles on banking, financial markets and payment systems, in both Italian and international academic journals. He has taught Monetary Economics courses and spoken at several seminars at universities in Italy and abroad on payment systems, the functioning of financial markets, and market infrastructure operations.
