Banca d’Italia allows researchers who submit a research project to process a broad set of microdata collected by the Bank in the exercise of its functions.

Submitting a research project

To submit a research project, complete the following steps:

  1. check the list of granular databases made available by the Research Data Center (RDC);
  2. identify the data of interest for your research project and make sure they are consistent with its objectives;
  3. specify the preferred processing system: remote execution system REX and/or Banca d'Italia's laboratory in Rome (labBI);
  4. check whether your university and/or research organization already features on the list of entities authorized to use labBI's banking microdata or ask them to enter into an agreement with Banca d'Italia to access banking microdata (Annex A - Italian only);

PLEASE NOTE: for access to banking microdata, make sure you have completed step 4 before moving further

  1. fill in the microdata access request form (Annex B), paying special attention to the content of the research proposal; sign the form and email it to ricerca.microdati@bancaditalia.it with a copy of your ID;
  2. if you want to merge the RDC databases with other non-confidential proprietary data, fill in and send the merge request form (Annex C).

Assessment and start of the research project

If your request fulfils the requirements and your research project is consistent with the contents of the chosen database, the RDC will grant you access to the microdata. Access approval (valid for 24 months and renewable) will be notified by email to the address specified in the form, with instructions on how to use the chosen processing system.

Output release

Each output is checked and released by the RDC, provided it does not breach any confidentiality rules. The minimum requirements to be met for the purposes of output release are listed in Annex D.

Source citation in published works

In order to allow Banca d'Italia to collect bibliographic material resulting from the use of the microdata, authors are required to fill in the publication form upon project completion. The source citation policy is available on the individual database webpages. Please note that, as a researcher, you bear full responsibility for the use of the data. Banca d'Italia disclaims any and all liability on that account.
