Banca d'Italia publishes twice-yearly statistics on the payment system organized into four thematic reports, in particular:
- Use by households and firms of retail payment services and instruments provided or issued by banks and non-banks, with a focus on technology and channels and access points to cash;
- Regional data on ATMs and POS terminals, non-cash transactions and spread of payment cards, with a sectoral breakdown for point-of-sale transactions and indicators of access to cash;
- Public payments and collection, distinguished between central government treasury operations and local government ad-ministrations;
- Functioning of the interbank clearing and settlement circuits managed by Banca d'Italia, as well as clearing and settlement services for transactions in securities.
