This guide to the Multimedia Archive aims to introduce the general public to the rich collection of sound recordings, audiovisual materials, films and other multimedia content housed by Banca d'Italia and which are an integral part of Italy's audiovisual memory. At the same time, in an era of rapid technological innovation and socio-cultural change, it draws attention to the challenges associated with the production and management of a particular type of historical sources, i.e. multimedia records, which have only recently gained recognition as documentary evidence in their own right, alongside textual records. In the digital era, public institutions and private organizations continuously produce multimedia content as part of their routine activities, making it necessary to implement management strategies to ensure the long-term preservation of these new sources for future historical research.
