No. 1041 - Mapping supply chains with micro data: the case of the Italian automotive industry
This paper maps the participation of Italian firms in the European automotive supply chain. Drawing on microdata on firm-to-firm transactions, it identifies the firms, sectors and regions most exposed to demand for motor vehicles, quantifies the value added generated along the supply chain, and simulates the effects of a possible shock to motor vehicle demand.
In 2022, more than 8,000 Italian firms were significantly exposed to the automotive supply chain. In addition to traditional manufacturing sectors, the supply chain also includes service activities, such as IT and research and development. Our estimates suggest that a fall in demand for motor vehicles would reduce value added among direct and indirect suppliers by €1.5 for every euro lost by final producers.
