Banca d'Italia held its annual Public Finance Workshop in Rome on 5-6 September 2024. The event brought together academics and experts from national and international institutions to analyse the most current and policy-relevant issues in public finance.
The workshop examined fiscal policies with a focus on the different dimensions of their sustainability: economic, social, and environmental. In their papers, speakers explored the challenges for public finances in a context of high debt, ageing population, and technological, climate and geopolitical changes.
The opening remarks were given by Chiara Scotti, Deputy Governor of Banca d'Italia. Era Dabla-Norris (Deputy Director of the IMF Fiscal Affairs Department) and Niklas Potrafke (Director of the ifo Center for Public Finance and Political Economy and Professor at the University of Munich) delivered the two keynote speeches.
