Prize for studies in mathematics and informatics at Italian high schools 2014
The prize ceremony was held on 6 June at Palazzo Koch for the 20 high school students who came top in the national competition for the Olympiad in Mathematics and Informatics.
The winners were decided together with the Ministry of Education (MIUR), the Italian Mathematical Union (UMI) and the Italian Association for Informatics and Automatic Computing (AICA).
With this award the Bank of Italy hopes to give a concrete sign of appreciation to students who achieve excellent results in these subjects. Investing in the education of young people is a key factor in developing the knowledge-based economy. These talented young people have been given a study holiday abroad to develop the subject area in which they excelled and to learn or polish their skills in a foreign language.
The group of young winners was warmly received by the Governor who, in the course of his speech, stressed the importance of mathematics and informatics for the development of independent thought and the capacity for innovation - the driver of productivity growth.
After the ceremony the students, together with their families and teachers, visited the Money Museum to view the Bank of Italy's coin collection and to appreciate the role that money has played in the various stages of economic history.
