Fabrizio Saccomanni (1942-2019)

The members of the Governing Board and all the Bank of Italy's present and former staff express their deepest condolences at the passing of Fabrizio Saccomanni, who is fondly remembered for his commitment to serving his nation and its institutions.

After receiving a degree in economics from Bocconi University in Milan and completing postgraduate studies in monetary and international economics at Princeton University, he joined the Bank in June 1967. From 1970 to 1975 he was seconded to the IMF, subsequently returning to the Bank to continue his career in the Research Department. In 1984 he became head of the Foreign Department and in 1997 he was appointed Central Manager for International Affairs. He represented the Bank in the major international financial organizations, participating in negotiations to create the Economic and Monetary Union.

In 2003 he left the Bank to become Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a position he held until 2006 when he was appointed Director General of the Bank of Italy. He also held the position of President of the Insurance Supervisory Authority (IVASS) as from 1 January 2013. In April of that year he resigned to become Minister of Economy and Finance in the government headed by Enrico Letta. In 2014 he was made Director General Emeritus of the Bank of Italy.

In April 2018 he became Chairman of the Board of Directors of UniCredit, a position he held until his death.

He passed away on 8 August 2019.
