Distributional accounts on household wealth in Italy: statistics updated to the fourth quarter of 2025
Today, Banca d'Italia released experimental statistics on the Distributional Wealth Accounts (DWA) for Italian households, updated to the fourth quarter of 2025.
The DWA provide a detailed picture of the distribution of wealth across different population groups and make it possible to analyse its evolution over time.
Distributional statistics on Italian household wealth are compiled quarterly by Banca d'Italia by combining data from the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS) - the harmonized survey on household finances in the euro area countries - with national accounts aggregates.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, Italian households' net wealth (including real estate and financial assets, net of liabilities) amounted to €453,000 per household, up slightly compared with 2024 (€431,000 per household).
The distribution of wealth remains concentrated: the wealthiest 10 per cent of households hold 60.6 per cent of total net wealth, while the bottom half of households hold only 7.2 per cent. Wealth inequality (measured by the Gini index) increased slightly compared with 2024 (from 71.5 to 72.2).
Portfolio composition varies significantly across wealth groups. For households in the bottom half of the distribution, more than 90 per cent of assets consist of dwellings (73.6 per cent) and deposits (17.5 per cent). Households in the upper wealth brackets, by contrast, hold more diversified portfolios, with a significant share of financial instruments other than deposits.
