With the aim of expanding the channels for microdata dissemination, Banca d'Italia opened an on-site laboratory, LabBI, located at the Research Data Center premises. The laboratory allows authorized researchers to view microdata and perform statistical processing through dedicated workstations.
At LabBI, granular data from business surveys are available for research purposes. Researchers employed by a research organization that has signed a data access agreement with Banca d'Italia are also granted access to data on the main balance sheet items of individual banks. For the first time, Banca d'Italia also made available the data on the average interest rates charged by each bank to euro-area households and non-financial corporations for various types of loans and deposits. The data are sourced from a sample of Italian banks; the time series are available with a monthly frequency from 2003 and updated annually. In order to preserve data confidentiality, the bank identification code (ABI code) is not disclosed.
In the future, even more data will be made available through LabBI. Click here for information on how to access LabBI and how to have your research organization enter into a data access agreement with Banca d'Italia. LabBI will work alongside the existing dissemination channels, i.e. open access to anonymized data (Public Use File) and remote processing of microdata without direct identification through the REX system.
