3rd IFC Workshop on Data Science in Central Banking

The BIS Irving Fisher Committee on Central Bank Statistics (IFC) is organising recurrent workshops on "Data science in central banking" with a broad audience of practitioners and technicians to review the ongoing adoption of data analytics and business intelligence techniques and developments in the big data ecosystem. The main objective is to showcase projects and share experience that can help to develop in-house knowledge and reduce the reliance on external services providers.

The 2023 workshop, co-organised with the Bank of Italy (BoI), will bring together central banks, international organisations, national statistical offices and other interested stakeholders and will focus on data sharing and access. It will take place in person in Rome on 17-19 October 2023 (with possibility of virtual participation for non-presenters).

Areas of particular interest

  • Data sharing practices between institutions
  • Data access arrangements for external researchers
  • Open data strategies
  • Open source software for data exchange, access and dissemination (including usage of SDMX/XBRL)
  • Data access and sharing applications (eg, anonymisation, privacy protection, federated learning)
  • Related data governance aspects

Submission of papers / presentations

This call invites submissions of papers / presentations covering these various themes. Accepted submissions will be published in a special issue of the IFC Bulletin. Authors from central banks, national statistics offices, international organisations and other public sector entities, as well as from academia and the private sector, are encouraged to apply.

Please email the title and short abstract (or full paper if available) of your presentation by 31 May 2023 to both IFC.secretariat@bis.org and datascienceincb@bancaditalia.it. Authors of accepted contributions will be notified as soon as decisions are made and at the latest by end of June 2023.

More information on the presentation guidelines will be provided to the presenters after abstract acceptance.
