Stefano Sordoni
Head of the Financial Supervision DirectorateBorn in Ancona in 1966, he is married, father of three.
He began his professional career in 1986 in the banking sector, working in a bank of national interest, where he gained a decade of experience in finance and market operations. In the meantime, he earned a degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Ancona and, in 1999, he joined the Central Administration of the Bank of Italy in Rome.
Assigned to the Financial Intermediation Supervision Directorate, in the early 2000s he contributed to the supervision of several innovative asset management and investment services initiatives, involving hedge funds, reserved funds, closed-end real estate funds, private equity funds, and investment firms.
He subsequently broadened his professional experience moving to bank supervision; in 2012, he became the Head of the Supervision Division at the Banca d'Italia Branch of Ancona, in charge of overseeing small, locally operating banks. In this role, he carried out several on-site inspections and took part to decision-making committees concerning supervisory actions/decisions.
In 2020, he joined again the Central Administration in Rome, where he took the role of Head of Financial Companies Division within the Financial Intermediaries Supervision Directorate. In this capacity, he was responsible for the supervision of non-bank financial intermediaries registered under Article 106 of the Consolidated Law on Banking (TUB) and contributed to the in-depth analyses of the risks of the shadow banking system, especially with regards to securitisations and supervision of servicers.
In 2023, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Directorate, further expanding his experience to any kind of entities and activities in the non-bank financial intermediation, including asset management, investment services, finance companies, payment and electronic money institutions. He was appointed Head of the Directorate in February 2026.
Over the years, he diversified his experience and expertise, also representing the Bank of Italy at conferences and public initiatives, collaborating with other authorities and with academia, also delivering lectures at the university.
