Gianmatteo Carlo Piazza
Head of the Currency Circulation Management DirectorateHe is Head of the Currency Circulation Management Directorate since July 2025. Previously he has been Deputy Head of the same Directorate between September 2020 and June 2025.
He holds a degree in Economics (magna cum laude) from Bocconi University, a M.SC in Economics from the Univeristy of Warwick (U.K.) and a Ph.D in Economics from University of Pavia.
He joined Banca d'Italia in 2025 and spent most of his career at the Bank working in the Directorate General for Economics, Statistics and Research, dealing with financial stability issues and monetary and financial statistics. He has also been member of the Secretariat of the Financial Stability Board in Basel, Switzerland, and he has worked for two years at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) in Washington, DC.
He has been Chair or member of several Eurosystem, FSB and OECD working groups and represented Banca d'Italia in G20 working groups.
He authored or co-authored several scientific publications in national and international journals and held lectures on monetary and financial statistics at La Sapienza University (Rome).
