No. 1023 - A "Beyond-GDP" approach to fair and sustainable well-being: integrating regional and gender perspectives
This paper analyses the relationship between various dimensions of well-being and gender equality across Italian regions over the 2018-23 period. We use data from Istat's "equitable and sustainable well-being" (Benessere equo e sostenibile, BES) indicators - covering health, education, economic well-being, social relations, and quality of life - to construct two composite indices: one capturing overall well-being and one measuring gender gaps. The analysis aims to describe geographical disparities along these two dimensions and their evolution over time.
Overall well-being reflects the traditional North-South divide and is primarily driven by economic development. Gender equality, by contrast, exhibits greater fragmentation across regions, with significant differences in economic and living conditions between men and women. Over the period under review, there has been some, albeit slow, convergence in overall well-being, while gender gaps have remained largely unchanged.
