This paper provides an overview of the regional policies for innovative start-ups in the Italian regions in the period 2012-18. The data were gathered from a survey carried out by Bank of Italy branches in the spring of 2018, which were later updated using several other sources.
The findings show that the Regions supported a significant number of projects and allocated a large volume of funds. An average of 4 projects per region were started up, with funding averaging €4.5 million per project. The financial resources were allocated very differently across regions, which tends to reflect the local policymakers' preferences rather than differences in the economic structure of the geographical areas.
