This annual publication summarizes the key findings of the sample survey on international merchandise transport conducted by the Bank of Italy since 1998 to compile the transport item of the Italian balance of payments, in accordance with the methodological conventions set out in the sixth edition of the IMF’s Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM6). About two hundred international transport operators are interviewed in order to get information on freight rates; market shares by nationality residence are also estimated. Data are computed as yearly averages by each mode of transport and type of load; external trade time series broken down by mode of transport are also reported.
