On 6 September 2012 the Governing Council of the ECB decided to adopt additional temporary measures to expand the list of assets eligible to be used as collateral in Eurosystem credit operations (Press release of 6 September 2012-Measures to preserve collateral availability). In particular, the ECB decided to accept marketable debt instruments denominated in US dollars (USD), pounds sterling (GBP) and Japanese yen (JPY).

At the same time, the ECB provided clarifications on the eligibility criteria and risk control measures applied to collateral denominated in currencies other than the euro in the section of its website entitled Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on foreign currency-denominated collateral.
