Born in 1914. In 1937 Guido Carli joined IRI in a managerial capacity and then in 1939 he became involved in the planning for war. In 1945 he was a member of the National Consultative Assembly and a board member of the Italian Foreign Exchange Office, of which he was appointed Chief Advisor three years later.

In 1947 he became Executive Director for Italy of the IMF and then from 1950 to 1952 was President of the European Payments Union; he remained a member of EPU until 1958. In 1952 he was appointed President of the Central Institute for Medium-Term Credit.

He was Minister for Foreign Trade from May 1957 to July 1958 and President of the Credit Consortium for Public Works (CREDIOP) and of the Credit Institute for Public Utilities (ICIPU) from January 1959 to August 1960.

In October 1959 he became Director General of the Bank of Italy and then Governor from August 1960 to July 1975. He held the post of President of the Association of Industry (Confindustria) from 1976 until 1980.

He was elected Senator in June 1983 and was Treasury Minister from July 1989 until June1992. He became President of the LUISS University in 1978, a post he held until his death in 1993.
