Born in Rome on 7 March 1959, he graduated with honours in Political Science, with a concentration in Economics, from La Sapienza University of Rome in 1983.

After working for communication and market research companies, Mr. Bernasconi joined the Bank of Italy in 1986, at the Milan branch, where he performed on- and off-site supervision.

In 1991 he was assigned to the Banking and Financial Supervision Area of the Bank's Head Office; in the Banking Supervision Department he was involved in the coordination of decentralized supervision, becoming Head of the Decentralized Banks Division I 2003.

In 2008 he was appointed manager responsible for the Branch Liaison Sector of the Area Coordination Unit, and in 2012 Deputy Head of the Unit.

On 27 January 2014 he was appointed Acting Head of the Coordination and External Relations Directorate, now Financial Supervision Coordination and External Relations Directorate.

Mr. Bernasconi has conducted technical assistance initiatives in favour of supervisory authorities in Eastern Europe, Latin America and China regarding credit cooperation, regulation and supervision of small banks.

He is the author of essays on banking supervision.
