Margherita Laura Cartechini

Head of the Individual Customer Protection Directorate

She was born in Maracaibo (Venezuela) on March 3, 1967 and is married with one child.

In 1989 she graduated with honours in Law from the University of Macerata. After a five-year experience at a primary Italian bank, she joined the Bank of Italy in 1992 at the Ancona Branch, where she worked until 1999 as part of the unit in charge of supervision over banks and financial institutions.

In 1999 she was assigned to the Banking Supervision Area, where she was involved in the supervision of smaller banks and coordinated the supervisory activities carried out by the branches of the Bank of Italy. She was also responsible for overseeing training initiatives and participated in meetings with delegations of foreign authorities, as part of international cooperation initiatives.

From January 2014 until March 2020, she was involved with customer protection tasks, in the role of Head of the unit that coordinates the activity of the Banking and Financial Ombudsman (Arbitro Bancario Finanziario).

In 2020, she was appointed Deputy Head of the Individual Customer Protection Directorate, and in April 2024 she became Head of the same unit. She is closely involved in the development of projects that use Artificial Intelligence to support the management of complaints by both the Bank of Italy and the Banking and Financial Ombudsman. She participates in Fin-net's Steering Committee at the European Commission.
