No. 1548 - Capital quality and regional disparities: evidence from commercial vehicle transactions
The study analyses territorial differences in the quality of motor vehicles owned by Italian companies, using a database of commercial and industrial vehicle transactions between 2015 and 2024. The quality of these vehicles is measured on the basis of age and environmental efficiency.
Firms in the South and Islands purchase older and less environmentally efficient vehicles on average and keep them in service for longer than firms in the North. The characteristics of firms and vehicles account for about one third of the territorial differences in the quality of these goods. The gap is also due to the pronounced territorial segmentation of the second-hand market, which limits the flow of newer vehicles from the North to the South.
