On 24 October 2025, Banca d'Italia organized a scientific roundtable in Rome on 'The Digital Economy Amid Rising International Tensions', in partnership with the George Washington University Competition and Innovation Lab. The event brought together academics, policymakers, and experts to discuss the evolving dynamics of the digital economy in an era of heightened international frictions and persistent technological interdependence. The program featured opening remarks by Andrea Brandolini, Director General for Economics, Statistics and Research at Banca d'Italia, followed by three scientific sessions - on AI supply chains and global interdependence, digital trade fragmentation, and the new frontiers of lawfare in the digital space - and a keynote address by Paul Nemitz (College of Europe and former lead Director at the European Commission for the reform of the GDPR, the Whistleblower Directive, the 'Snowden' follow up, the negotiations of the EU - US Privacy Shield).
