Survey on International Tourism - 2025

26 June 2026

The report on Italy's international tourism survey for 2025 is now available in the Statistics series (at present only in Italian). The survey, conducted by the Bank of Italy since 1996 for the purpose of compiling the services item of the balance of payments, collects information on tourism expenditure, inbound and outbound travellers, and the main characteristics of the trip.

The results of the survey - based on interviews with and counts of resident and non-resident travellers at Italian border points - show that in 2025 the tourism surplus reached €22.7 billion; as a share of GDP, it remained stable at 1.0 per cent. Expenditure by foreign travellers in Italy increased by 4.6 per cent (3.1 per cent in real terms). Nearly two-thirds of this growth was attributable to visitors travelling to Italy to participate in the Jubilee celebrations. Expenditure by Italian travellers abroad rose by 3.2 per cent in nominal terms and by 6.2 per cent in real terms, supported by the appreciation of the euro, which helped contain travel costs in destinations outside the euro area.
