The workshop discussed how to shape the Central Bank as an effective organisation, by defining the most appropriate structure and adequate coordination mechanisms, by adopting a process-oriented approach, by keeping the impact of the internal rules to a minimum, by making the most out of the information technology and out of the managerial skills.

Specific case studies and examples from the experience of the Bank of Italy were provided: the changes in the organisational structure, the simplification of the internal rules, the adoption of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, the dematerialization of all the internal papers, the widespread availability of collaboration tools, the introduction of a more flexible work time regime and of a flatter career structure. Participants were asked to take an active part in discussions and analysis of the case studies. Finally, the importance of a synergic interaction between the variables at stake and of a comprehensive vision of the organisation as a system was highlighted and discussed.
