Born in Macerata on 12 August 1960, Gian Luca Trequattrini is Secretary to the Governing Board of the Bank of Italy as of 5 February 2024. In this capacity, he manages the institutional activity of the Governing Board; assists the Governor and the Senior Deputy Governor in drawing up organizational policies and, more generally, the Bank's operational and management policies, coordinating all the projects assigned to him by the Governing Board; coordinates the Bank's safety and security policies; is responsible for the activities of the Secretariat to the Governing Board and of the Communications Directorate; is in charge of matters relating to ethics, anti-corruption and transparency; and is the Data Protection Officer.

He joined the Bank of Italy in 1986 and was assigned to the Banking and Financial Supervision Area, where he worked on the reorganization of Italy's state-owned banks, bank crisis management, and the drafting of the Consolidated Law on Banking and its implementing regulations. From 1999 to 2006, he was the Deputy Head of the Competition Division, with duties connected to the role of antitrust authority in the banking sector. In 2006, he moved to the Organization Directorate, where he was put in charge of the Planning and Organizational Development Division and managed the reorganization of the Bank's branch network. From 2013 to 30 June 2020, he was Head of the Secretariat to the Governing Board and Communications Directorate. In this capacity, he was secretary for the meetings of the Governing Board in which decisions are taken on measures that have an impact outside the Bank and also secretary to the joint Governing Board of IVASS. He dealt with the reform of the Bank’s capital and the related governance issues. From 1 July 2020 to 4 February 2024, as Managing Director, he became Managing Director for Internal Audit, taking on responsibilities for ethics, anti-corruption, data protection and transparency as well. As senior advisor to the Governing Board, he managed the Bank's institutional relations connected with top-level meetings and summits and relations with the Bank's statutory bodies, acting as secretary for the meetings of the Governing Board; and he presided over the internal committee for contributions and donations.

He graduated with honours in Economics at the Sapienza University of Rome and subsequently did a postgraduate course on Industrial Organization at the London School of Economics.

He has taught as a non-tenured professor at the Faculty of Economics of the Sapienza University of Rome and at the 'Alma Mater' University in Bologna.
