How does the Treasury issue tax refunds and how long does the process take?
Banca d'Italia, acting as State Treasurer, issues tax refunds ordered by the Revenue Agency by crediting the recipient's payment account or by means of a certified cheque issued by Poste Italiane S.p.A.
The reimbursement procedure is entirely electronic and is initiated as soon as the State Treasury receives the payment provision from the Revenue Agency containing the information to make the payment (including: due date, amount cleared, crediting method).
Banca d'Italia has no advance knowledge of when it will receive the payment provision from the Revenue Agency; however, the electronic procedure ensures that once the payment provision reaches Banca d'Italia, the beneficiary of a refund will be promptly credited the sums owed to them on the designated current account or by a certified cheque (assegno vidimato) issued and delivered by Poste Italiane S.p.A.

How can I claim reimbursement of a sum wrongly paid to the State?
Requests for reimbursement must be sent to the government administration to which the sum was paid out.
When credit transfers are settled, Banca d'Italia pays the amounts directly into the State budget or into the accounts that individual administrations hold with the State Treasury, as appropriate.
To find the administration to which to apply for reimbursement, you can consult the registry of IBAN codes on the MEF-RGS website (click here), where the name of each administration is listed next to its IBAN code.
How is a temporary deposit to participate in a tender made? And how can I request its subsequent return?
In order to set up a temporary deposit, the payment must be made by credit transfer. The list of IBANs for provisional deposits can be found on the MEF-RGS website (click here). The credit transfer payment reference must comply with a specific format (see paragraph 2b of RGS Circular No 27 of 6.11.2018, click here ), and with the details given by the authority in whose favour the security deposit is made or with the details indicated in the contract notice.
In order to request the release of a temporary deposit (with its partial or full repayment), depositors must apply to the State regional accounting department (Ragioneria Territoriale dello Stato, RTS) that matches the IBAN code used for the credit transfer (click here to find the RTS). Depositors (remitters) must provide the relevant RTS with a copy of the credit transfer receipt (indicating the Transaction Reference Number, TRN), and the authorization to release the deposit by the administration in whose favour it was made.
What is the procedure for making a definitive deposit as a guarantee towards a public administration? And how can its subsequent repayment be requested?
In order to constitute a definitive deposit, you must contact the State regional accounting department (Ragioneria Territoriale dello Stato, RTS) operating in the regional capital of reference (click here). The competent RTS will provide a position number, the IBAN, the name and the payment reference to be indicated in making the transfer.
In order to request the release (repayment of the sum paid) of a definitive deposit, applicants must contact the State regional accounting department (Ragioneria Territoriale dello Stato, RTS) operating in the regional capital where the deposit was constituted (the offices that issued the registration number for the deposit).
How can a payment issued to a deceased person be collected by their heirs?
In this case, the legitimate heirs need to file an application with the administration that has issued the payment.
