The objective of this paper is to identify the distinctive features of banking crises that occurred in Italy between 1970 and 1996. The analysis has involved banks under extraordinary administration or compulsory administrative liquidation. Where possible, the analysis includes banks involved in consolidation or restructuring operations. During the period considered, the crises of banks under extraordinary administration had limited systemic repercussions. This impact would increase once the non-officially declared crises would be considered. Until the 1980s, there was a predominance of extraordinary administrations; subsequently, the different conditions in the markets led to greater use of compulsory administrative liquidations. The study highlights that in Italy the costs of the crises borne by general taxation were limited in an international comparison.
