No. 4 - The Bank of Italy and the ENSI project:Sources in the Bank of Italy’s archives for the history of the development of the Italian energy industry

The ENSI (Energia nucleare Sud Italia) project led to the construction of the Garigliano nuclear power plant, inaugurated in 1964. This paper makes use of documents in the Bank of Italy’s archives to reconstruct the project’s European and international context, the cooperative ventures in which Italy participated, the organizations and institutions concerned with the development of nuclear power in Italy, and the other nuclear power projects which went forward at the same time. It also considers the Joint Study conducted by the Italian authorities and the World Bank up to the project’s approval, and the negotiations which led to the financing of the Garigliano plant through a loan to the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno.
