III - The Nazists and the Gold of the Bank of Italy. Subtraction and Recovery 1943-1958by Sergio Cardarelli and Renata Martano

The book reconstructs, according to the archival sources available thus far, the events of the gold of the Bank of Italy after the armistice of 8 September 1943. The gold reserves of the country were placed, de facto, under German control and transferred first to Milan and then to Fortezza. From there, with the consent of the Italian Social Republic, a part of the gold was transported to Germany during 1944. With the war over, Italy was engaged in complex negotiations to regain reserves that led to the complete restitution of the gold left at Fortezza and to the admission of our country to the Gold Pool, an organism created by the Allies for the restitution pro quota to the nations having the right of the gold stolen by the Nazis. As a result of the decisions of the Pool, Italy, like the other countries, returned to possession of a quantity of gold equal to ⅔ of that transported to Germany.
