III - Giolitti and the Birth of the Bank of Italy in 1893edited by Guglielmo Negri

The Bank of Italy was born with the law 10 August 1893 n. 449, in a situation of serious banking crisis and during one of the most difficult moments in the economic history of the Country. The Introduction of Guglielmo Negri and the published documents reconstruct the political and economic environment in which the event matured and document the way in which the Bank of Italy was established as well as the very first phases of its operation.

All the various steps leading to the passing of the law are highlighted: the negotiations between banks and the government, conventions, draft government law, reports of parliamentary committees, discussions first in the Chambers of Deputies and then in the Senate. The minutes of the Supreme Council of the Banca Nazionale concerning the events of banking reorganization are also published.

Two appendices complete the volume, the first on the previous regulatory framework and on the liquidation of the Banca Romana, the latter on the chronology of the period in examination and the biographies of the relevant characters.
