Current Issues in Fiscal PolicyRome, 31 March 2 April 2016

The workshop aimed at shedding further light on a few recent and relevant fiscal policy issues. Six main themes were discussed.

First up were the circumstances following sovereign default events, examining in particular their macroeconomic consequences and the conditions for the recovery of market access.

Then the criteria for assessing public debt sustainability came under scrutiny. Third, the completion and strengthening of the EMU institutional framework was discussed.

Then the complex and multi-directional links between taxation, regulation and economic growth were explored. The institutional framework for subnational budgetary policies and its consequences was next and, finally, the macroeconomic estimates of fiscal policies’ effects.

Overall, the studies presented in the workshop, showing a wide variety of methodologies, made a significant contribution to the economic debate. In the tradition of previous editions, great attention was devoted to institutional design and policy developments.
