Warning: Deepfake videos circulating on the Internet and on social media platforms
Banca d'Italia is warning the public about videos created using deepfake technology currently circulating on the Internet and on social media platforms. These videos use deepfake technology to mimic the features and voice of Fabio Panetta, Banca d'Italia's Governor, and send out false messages endorsing investment platforms with the likely aim of defrauding members of the public.
Banca d'Italia wishes to stress that none of this content is genuine.
The public is therefore strongly advised:
- not to trust these messages;
- to refrain from providing personal data or making any payments in response to requests made in such content;
- to avoid sharing the videos or related messages.
To protect its reputation, safeguard the public, and prevent the unlawful use of its name, Banca d'Italia requests the removal of false and fraudulent content whenever it is detected and reports the matter to the competent authorities.
