The members of the Governing Board, along with active and retired employees of the Bank of Italy, were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Vincenzo Desario, Director General Emeritus. During his career, he helped to shape the Bank's response at pivotal moments of the country's history. He demonstrated exemplary independence of judgment and was known for the passion and bravery with which he carried out his duties. The Bank recalls his uncommon humanity and professional qualities that marked 46 years of a long and distinguished career.
Born in Barletta in 1933, he joined the Bank in 1960 and throughout his career worked as an inspector in the field of banking supervision, rising to become Central Manager for Supervision in 1983. In 1993, he was appointed Deputy Director General and one year later Director General, a position he held until 2006, when the Governing Board nominated him Director General Emeritus.
