The first remote laboratory for analysis of elementary Istat data inaugurated at the Bank of Italy

The Bank of Italy and the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) today inaugurated the first remote laboratory for access to elementary data from the surveys managed by Istat. The laboratory will enable Bank of Italy researchers to access data collected by Istat for their analysis and research without having to physically travel to Istat headquarters.

Remote access to elementary Istat data is an innovation compared with the traditional exclusive access to the ADELE Laboratory (Laboratory for the Analysis of Elementary Data) located at Istat’s main headquarters.

Over the last two years, Istat has been carrying out experiments with the Directorate General for Economics, Statistics and Research of the Bank of Italy, with the goal of creating an architectural prototype for a remote laboratory that can be exported to and replicated in other organizations in the National Statistics System (Sistan). Specifically, the experiments led to a solution whereby the elementary data are not physically transferred to the researcher; they remain on Istat's server. They also set out the infrastructural and organizational to safeguard the confidentiality of the information, as envisaged by Comstat Directive 11/2018.
