Symposium on 'Market power in the AI value chain: between trade and finance'
On 4 November, the symposium on 'Market power in the AI value chain: between trade and finance', organized by Banca d'Italia in collaboration with LUISS University, was held at Banca d'Italia's head office in Rome.
The symposium explored the main competition issues arising from the development of artificial intelligence along global supply chains and their potential implications for the financial sector. The programme comprised three scientific sessions and a keynote lecture delivered by Professor Joshua Gans of the University of Toronto. Discussions focused on the factors shaping market power across different segments of the AI value chain, the effects on competition and international trade, and the growing role of large technology service providers in the financial sector.
The event also addressed the opportunities offered by AI in terms of data processing and analytical capabilities, as well as the risks associated with the concentration of technology supply, including those relating to operational resilience, financial stability and competition.
