Survey on International Tourism - 2024

30 June 2025

The report on Italy's international tourism survey for 2024 is now available in the Statistics series (at present only in Italian). The survey, conducted by the Banca d'Italia since 1996 for the purpose of compiling the services item of the balance of payments, collects information on tourism expenditure, inbound and outbound travellers, and the main characteristics of the trip.

The results of the survey – based on interviews and counts of resident and non-resident travellers at Italian border points – show that in 2024, Italy's revenues from international travel increased significantly, both in nominal and real terms. The tourism balance surplus reached €21.2 billion, equivalent to 1 per cent of GDP, as in 2019. Revenues increased especially from certain euro-area countries and from Asia. The largest contribution to tourism revenues came from holiday trips, particularly for cultural visits and city tourism, confirming the predominance of this type of travel among foreign tourists in Italy. Italian travelers' spending abroad also increased, especially in euro area countries and primarily for vacation purposes.
