Survey on International Merchandise Transport - 2025

19 June 2026

The report on the survey on Italy's international merchandise transport for 2025 is now available. The survey, conducted by the Bank of Italy since 1998, contributes to the compilation of the "services" item of the balance of payments and collects data on freight rates broken down by mode of transport and type of load; moreover, carriers' market shares by nationality of residence are estimated.

The results of the survey, based on interviews conducted with 197 international freight transport operators, indicate a generally declining trend in both air and maritime transport costs, the latter reflecting a situation in which the growth in cargo supply exceeded demand. The deficit in freight transport services in Italy's balance of payments widened, affected by the decline in the market shares of domestic carriers; the deterioration in the balance was concentrated in the maritime sector and, to an even greater extent, in the road transport sector, where freight rates increased.
