Second Conference on 'Applied Macroeconomics'
The 2nd international conference on 'Applied Macroeconomics' was held on 8 and 9 October at Banca d'Italia's Carlo Azeglio Ciampi Conference Centre in Rome. The event was organized jointly with the Bank of Canada and the Centre for Applied Macroeconomics and Commodity Prices (CAMP) at the BI Norwegian Business School.
The conference brought together people from the academic world and international institutions, and central bank researchers to discuss the key macroeconomic challenges and policy responses in an increasingly interconnected global environment. Over the two days, participants presented research on topics of major importance, including the economic effects of geopolitical tensions, developments in energy and commodity markets, fiscal and monetary policy, international trade and finance, and the impact of technological change, the digital transition and artificial intelligence on the economy.
The conference was opened by Chiara Scotti, Deputy Governor of Banca d'Italia, who highlighted how essential applied macroeconomic research is for understanding structural changes in the economy, assessing the effects of global shocks, and keeping analytical tools up to date to support economic policymaking.
The programme also featured two keynote lectures delivered by Christiane Baumeister from the University of Notre Dame and Francesco Zanetti from the University of Oxford. Their presentations focused on the effects of oil shocks on households' inflation expectations and on the economic consequences of sanctions for oil markets and international trade flows.
